ISLAMABAD: It was a sunny morning, my cell phone was ringing, and William Javed on the other side said that Punjab Government arrested Aslam Parvez Sohtra [Pakistan Christian Post] from Islamabad in the wake of Youhanabad demonstration after the twin blasts. It was shocking news for me, as Aslam Parvez Sohtra with his team [HLCP] was at my house a day before his arrest. He was planning to raise a voice for the victims of Youhanabad but he himself became a victim; since then nobody ever raised a voice for his release.

Earlier the local media reported and declared Sohail Johnson as the main source behind this outrage [International – The News]. Certainly he has to run out to save his skin. This is the result if you work as a human rights activist and raise a voice for your people. I know these people have been devotedly working for the community. It is really shameful that some people from the same community have been betrayed with them. This disloyalty is not with these people but with the community.

On March 15, 2015, at least 19 people were killed and more than 80 injured when two suicide bombers attacked two churches in Youhanabad [Global News Centre], Lahore, sparking mob violence in which two other suspected militants died. After the incident Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif [Wikipedia] has not visited the people of his own constituency to show solidarity, instead CM has visited one killer’s family and assured them that people form Youhanabad had been arrested.

In the entire episode that has taken place, we have seen the double standards in how things are dealt with when Muslims are the victims which are becoming obvious. After the death of two men, the media and everyone else conveniently forgot the dozens of victims from the Christian community [Dawn], and the threat that looms over their heads because of the actions of a few individuals. Though Christians have repeatedly condemned the unfortunate incident from various platforms, but the electronic media has shied away from airing the other side of the story. No one talked about the people who died saving lives. No one was talking about the victims or the survivors. There should be a balanced approach to the situation from our media friends.

After the incident the mob was like an unguided missile… when they reacted no one was there to handle them neither police nor Christian leadership. The situation could have been controlled if the mob had been dispersed by bringing the leadership in, but no leadership [individuals] were not seen on the ground. Any community [typically] has two leaderships, one is the political and the other is the top clergy. It is very unfortunate that both [community] leaders have had no statement of purpose or plan of action to deal with such situations.

Unfortunately politicians have lost their trustworthiness and the clergy is busy in selling church properties etc. Missionary work has turned to business instead service. The clergy is not serving the nation but busy in making money. Educational institutions established under church based organizations meant to serve the nation are not taking Christian students in. Big churches have ample development funds if it spends some percentage for the betterment of the community. There is no doubt that the Christian community will track on prosperity. There are many small churches but the bigger refuse to coordinate with them. The NGO sector run by Christian management is working for their vested interests. Thus the poor Christian community is seen in this meager condition.

There is routine discrimination/persecution seen around but there are a number of major incidents happening like Shantinager, Sangla Hill, Gojra, Joseph colony, Youhanabad etc. [The Express Tribune]. Even after these many incidents, I don’t see the Christian leadership – neither the clergy nor the political – showing the seriousness that is expected of them. What ever happened cannot be undone but the people that are left need to be protected. Unless we are united we can’t build pressure for our rights, we won’t count for anything, and we can’t mold the government or do any opinion building. I am sure if we put our house in order, we all will lead a happier life.

Qaiser Ayub, Held Over Blasphemy Allegation Sent to Jail

Qaiser Ayub is a Pakistani Christian. From what I have been able to decipher is he is an educated man which seems to be relatively rare among the Christian minority of Pakistan. According to Shamim Masih he has a MA in Computer Science. Apparently back in 2011 on a blog he operated he is accused of writing or depicting the false prophet Mohammed in unflattering terms. In case you have been hiding under a rock that is illegal in Pakistan and the entire Muslim world for that matter. In Pakistan Christians are accused of some kind of illegal blasphemy acts all the time and most often they are falsely accused as a matter of spite by Sunni Muslims.

In the case of Qaiser Ayub who was actually a Pakistan college professor, I have to wonder what the reason was for sticking around Pakistan since 2011 with a blasphemy infraction hanging over his head. At any rate the blasphemy charge caught up with him a few days ago and was arrested in Lahore. Shamim Masih writes that that Sohail Johnson – the Chairman of the Christian organization SLMP is in Qaiser’s corner. In trying to find some background on the incident I also discovered that Sardar Mushtaq Gill – the National Director of the Christian organization Legal Evangelical Association Development (LEAD) is in Qaiser’s corner.

Pakistani Christian and civil rights organizations too often compete for foreign funding. I pray Qaiser’s case is one in which both the SLMP and the LEAD are working together to combat the blasphemy charge against Qaiser Ayub.

ISLAMABAD: After a week of the burning of Christian couple to death in Kot Radha Kishan, Punjab police have arrested Qaiser Ayub, 40 a blogger, from Lahore over an alleged act of blasphemy. According to the sources, a Christian man, holding a Master’s degree in computer sciences, used a website to make blasphemous remarks. [He was booked under the Pakistan Blasphemy Law.] Sources told that a Christian man was alleged [to use] derogatory language against the Holy Prophet in his blogs.

Mohammad Saeed, complained and filed an application in [the] city Police Station against the accused and [the] case was registered First Investigation Report (FIR) no. 105/11 under section 295-C in PS. Talagan, Dist. Chakwal. The accused went into hiding after the registration of the FIR against him for a couple of years. On 14 November, 2014, Chakwal police arrested him from Lahore and presented him in the court on 15 November in Talagang. According to the police the FIR was registered on June 9, 2011 and the man was arrested after three and half years.

According to police officials, Qaiser is alleged of drawing sketches against Islam on his blogs.

According to Sohail Johnson, chairman Sharing Life Ministry Pakistan (SLMP), the family of Qaiser Ayub, his wife Amina Bibi and three children are in safe custody. SLMP will be taking care of his family and his case as well. The organization is arranging legal assistance for his case.

Sources confirmed Jabbar Hussian – SP Rawalpindi range is appointed to investigate the case. Qaiser Ayub is shifted to jail for his judicial investigation. [Again] sources confirmed the Police is trying to hide the secret of the case investigation and requested the media people to keep it in a low profile.

Rise up for ‘A Cause’

We Americans hear most about the atrocities against Christians committed by the ISIS terrorists in the conflict ablaze in the areas of Iraq and Syria. But you have to understand that wherever Christians live in a Muslim dominated nation they are persecuted often in some of the most barbaric ways reminiscent of Early Christianity when the Roman Empire at various time tried to stamp the Christian faith until Constantine the Great embrace it.

Shamim Masih writes about an incident that in America was the Mid-term election. In Pakistan two Christians – a couple – tried to get released from their bondage labor agreement at a brick kiln because the lady was pregnant with their fourth child. The Muslim owner demanded an insurmountable amount of Pakistan Rupees for her release. When push came to shove the Muslim owner decided to be vindictive and a blasphemy accusation was broadcast about them in a Muslim village. The Muslims came out as a mob beat, stripped them for humiliation and tossed them alive into the burning kiln oven.

ISLAMABAD: On November 04, 2014, it was bright sunny day in Pakistan, and Shia Muslims were mourning over the incident [that] happened hundreds years ago in Karbala. Due to 10^th Muharram event, mobile service was off in the major cities of the country and thus internet was not working as well in our surroundings. In the morning, my friend Sohail Johnson told me on the phone that a mob attacked a Christian couple and burnt their bodies at a brick kiln where they worked. Due to the distortion in the line, I could not hear it clearly but I perceived that the poor Christian couple met a terrible end. Later I got the detailed story. According to details, a Christian married couple, Sijjad Masih (the name mentioned in the FIR) and his wife Saima Bibi (nick name Shama) were beaten to within an inch of their lives and then burnt alive in an oven of a brick kiln. Think of it, all is done in the name of Islam. A false charge of blasphemy was leveled against the couple in what was really a money dispute. The Muslim owner of brick kiln exacted revenge on the non-Muslims by leveling false charges, and the punishments are savage [as in extralegal rather than rule of law].

To me it is not a new story, it has been happening to Christians for many years. And it reminds us of the Gojra incident. The laws of Sharia are used to exact revenge against religious minorities. We don’t as yet know, in the absence of any judicial process, if they were guilty of any offence at all. We do know that blasphemy laws in the country have been frequently misused. It is the same practice, they did [it] in 2009 in Gojra, and [the] seven family members [who] were burnt alive. It is a systematic approach to wipe out the minorities from the Islamic State of Pakistan. First they accuse them of blasphemy by accusing them of desecrating [the] Quran and then killing them. This has been their [Sunni Muslim] long time approach and the World still watches.

The controversial blasphemy laws were formulated in the 1980s during General Zia-ul-Haq’s martial law regime. A conviction or merely an accusation of blasphemy can put one’s life in danger. Even if one is acquitted the fear of death at the hands of vigilantes remains. Even the courts and legislators think twice before dwelling into the sensitivities of these issues.

Around 1300 people have been charged under the stringent blasphemy laws of Pakistan between 1986 until 2014. And according to sources, more than 50 people accused of blasphemy were killed before their respective trials were over. There are 14 people, who were sentenced to death and are waiting on death row and 19 were granted a life sentence. However, the death sentence has never been implemented. Prior to 1986, only 14 cases pertaining to blasphemy were reported.

Blasphemy is a very sensitive subject in [our] country, with even unproven allegations often prompting mob violence. Anyone convicted, or even just accused, risks a violent and bloody death at the hands of vigilantes. In the recent outrageous act in Check No. 59 [i.e. the live burning of Sijjad Masih and Saima Bibi], Sohail Johnson, Chairman, Sharing Life Ministry (SLMP), reached on the spot at once with his team and [expedited] his job, arguing with the officials [even] in registering [the] first investigating report (FIR), collecting ash and body parts of the deceased. He helped to take them and buried them in their parent village Clarkabad [Link]. A few [of the] Christian’s political figures were seen there as well.

Tahir Naveed Chaudhry chairman Pakistan Minority Alliance (PMA) reached there and staged a protest rally on second day of the incident.

Albert David chairman Pakistan United Christian Movement (PUCM) denounced the increasing victimization of religious minorities. He demanded to take strict and immediate action against the people involved in the killing of a Christian couple. He warns the government if the victimization continues people will consider other options.

Sajid Ishaq demanded the government to punish the people who misuse this law. He said the State should made substantial efforts to protect minorities from being victimization by the miscreants. Chief of Pakistani Interfaith League (PIL) declared this incident another example of biased behavior and prejudiced mind sets.

Basharat Khokhar, a human right activist declared this brutal killing an inhuman action. He demanded the authority to punish the culprits to set an example for others. There is not rule of law and minorities especially Christians are targeted time to time, he added.

Some other Christian activists in and outside the country have showed their deep concern about the recent incident. Few political and religious figures were also seen in few pictures. All of these people are doing their job but much require to be done. I think, correctly said Albert David that somehow we are increasingly becoming vulnerable to the discriminatory laws and mob violence. And nobody knows who will be the next victim of this law. The sward is hanging on. We need to step forward and take action against this brutality. Enough is enough; all Christian leadership outside the government, should demand the Christian parliamentarians to stand with the community and demand the government to re-visit this law. I tell you if you have not taken solid step to stop them, tomorrow will be your turn. Look, Salman Taseer, Ex-Governor Punjab and Shahbaz Bhatti were ruthlessly murdered in the capital. And the murderer of Salman Taseer lives comfortably in a special cell at Rawalpindi’s Adiayla Jail.

Christians of the country should demand the government to bring amendments in this law and until then should stop its application. U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has already demanded to stop implementation of blasphemy laws until reforms.

SLMP taking up Asiya case to Supreme Court

ISLAMABAD: The time has come that minority parliamentarians need to take a stand; it is time to reopen the debate on the blasphemy law in Pakistan, said Sohail Johnson, chairman Sharing Life Ministry Pakistan (SLMP) [About SLMP]. After the decision of a special division bench of LHC, upholding the death sentence of Asiya Bibi, my heart leapt out to see her kids and after sitting with the Aashiq Masih and her kids, I decided to take this case and now SLMP is going to file an appeal in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, announced Sohail Johnson.

According to the details, a farm worker, mother of 5, is [being] kept away from her children for five years and four month. Yes, Asiya Bibi, dared to drink water in the cup of her co-workers in the field. Asiya became the victim of prejudice and greed and was accused of committing blasphemy. She has been in jail since June 19, 2009. She was awarded death sentence by the additional District and Sessions Judge Justice Muhammad Naveed Iqbal, despite the lack of evidence on November, 2010. On 16^th October, 2014, a special division bench of the Lahore High Court dismissed the appeal, condemned Christian woman Asiya Bibi and upheld her death sentence on the blasphemy charges.

Ashiq Masih, the husband of the poor lady, was bitterly weeping when I met him. He said, it [i.e. Sohail Johnson’s announcement] was a ray of hope but the rejection of the appeal has shattered his confidence on Pakistani courts. He confidently said that judges were under pressure. He is still not in the position to control his nerves and how his children will survive, who were hoping their mother [would] come back home. But still he is hopeful and will go for the next judicial avenue – the Supreme Court of Pakistan to appeal.

According to her husband, the counsel, was weak and couldn’t convince the judge. He said he will choose the best lawyer of the town in the apex court [common description of Pakistan’s highest court which is a Supreme Court]. Ashiq Masih [placed] blame that [the Muslims] Asma and Mafia. [These two] are the sisters [accusing culprits]. And they falsely implicated Asiya Bibi in the blasphemy case because they felt disgraced and dishonored on the basis of altercation [at the Muslim designated well] and [the] hard words extended to them by Asiya Bibi when they denied drinking water brought by her for them.

Ashiq Masih was also critical of the role of some Christian non- government organizations in this regard. He said some of them have worked to worsen the situation. A number of lawyers and non-government organizations are in the race to take credit but are not doing anything practical. A human rights champion reportedly has supported [Asiya Bibi with] just 3000 Rs. [Pakistan Rupees] ever since, but have been gathering millions of the funds in her name [that Asiya has not benefited from], he added.

Shamim reports on how Muslim robbers burgled an Anglican Priest in a Christian community within Okara City of Punjab Province Pakistan. Here is supplemental info that Shame did not include:

… [T]he Priest and his whole family for four hours. The robbers robbed the priest and forcibly snatched all [his] valuables household things including some gold jewelry.

In the meanwhile, the watchman heard the crying and noise of Children and his wife. The watchman [awoke] the whole Christian village and surrounded the priest’s house. The other three unknown robber accomplices ran away seeing the villagers coming towards them.

The robbers opened fired at the villagers and also shot at the Priest and his family but they all [were] miraculously saved. The Christian villagers competed bravely with the robbers and rescued the hostage family of the priest.

… They told that the relatives of the robbers were making threats to burn the whole Christian village as [Muslims did] recently burning Joseph Colony [in] Lahore, if they would not agree to compromise with [the relatives] and [force the] release of the robbers from jail by giving a favorable statement [pertaining to] the robbers.

“My family is not safe now in that village and I have requested the Rt. Rev. Irfan Jamil Bishop of Lahore to transfer me to some other Church congregation”, told Rev. Hanook David.

“I have also requested the police for security and also to Bishop of Lahore to give me some security for our safety because now the relatives of the robbers are openly making threats to me to face dire consequences if I would not compromise with them. We have seen death very near to us because the robbers opened firing at us but Our Lord Jesus saved us,” he added further.

Priest Faces Extreme Roles

ISLAMABAD: The spike in attacks against the Christians’ community makes Pakistan one of the most world’s dangerous counties for religious minorities. Pastor Hanook David and his family were assaulted by some extremists in the midnight [hour].

According to the details, a Christian priest, David and his family were sleeping in the courtyard of his house in the village Bethlehem chuck No. 2, Okara city in Province Punjab. During midnight; five men; reportedly jumped into his house with weapons. The attackers tormented the family members, snatched the valuable material and locked them in washroom.

Bethlehem is a Christian village in district Okara, with more than eighty Christian families [who] work as laborers or peasants. The young villagers guard the houses during the night, luckily on this same day, the guard force watched a few unknown people in the streets and heard the sob and rushed towards the pastor’s house. They gathered around the house and asked them to surrender. In the meanwhile; the villagers also woke up and called the police officials. After a few hours [of apprehending] exercise, the villagers were able to hand them to the police. The priest told by telephone that although the police arrested them [for a short time], [then] they set them free after a while. It would not be the first time the local police in Pakistan concocted a story to aid a Muslim attacker.

The case was registered FIR 138/14 in Chochak police station, but the Investigation Officer (IO) Mohammad Murtaza and SHO Haji Saif al Rehman reportedly demanded a bribe to precede the case.

Sohail Johnson, chairman Sharing Life Ministries Pakistan (SLMP) went there with his team and looked into the matter [and] said I am not surprised to hear [about the bribery demand] as it is another manifestation of the extreme anti-Christian bigotry that pervades Pakistani society and culture as a whole. [Pakistan is in] a state of extreme moral bankruptcy.

Recently a Christian MPA in Baluchistan was shot dead by his own security guard and Shahbaz Bhatti former Federal Minister for Minorities was assassinated in the capital of Pakistan but police concocted the story to aid the attackers, he added.

Islam and the rape of non-Muslim girls and women is becoming an epidemic in the Muslim dominated world and areas in the West in which a large concentration of Muslims live (Can you say, “No-go zones [SEE Also HERE] where Muslims dominate?”). I read an article from an ex-Muslim from Bangladesh describing going to an international school in Thailand that mostly Asians attended but that there were also a large amount of Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Indians. The purpose the article is about the brutality of Islam especially as it pertained to the genocide of 3 MILLION Hindus in Bangladesh during that nation’s fight for independence from Pakistan. The topic that was shocking was how very religious (meaning radical Islamic) Pakistanis view sex with non-Muslims.

After a few weeks, an opportunity came for me to ask one of these Islamists as to what would happen to them since they have committed the sin of zina. They were very surprised at me for this impertinence. He told me that they have committed no sin. What? No sin! My brain must have failed to work! I simply could not hold my breath any longer to listen to what they had to say. He told me that Thais were not Muslims; so having fun with their girls were all right. In fact, he told me that that had been the practice in Islam for centuries. Whenever the Muslims defeated the non-Muslims, they could do whatever they (the Muslims) wanted with the non-Muslims. The Muslims can use the non-Muslim women as sex slaves and please themselves as they wished. A Muslim even had the right to kill the women if he wished. In simple language the non-Muslims were not really human beings. They (the non-Muslims) were inferior even to cattle and animals. Moreover, the Pakistani told me that the Prophet had allowed to have sex if a man is living overseas. I could not believe of what I was hearing! He then quoted me from his memory many verses from Koran and Hadith to support his views. Then I reminded my Pakistani friend that there was quite a small minority of Muslims in Thailand. So, if by accident he had sex with one of the Thai Muslim prostitutes what will befall him. He answered glibly, “No problem.” When I return to Pakistan I shall have a Milad Mehfil and ask for forgiveness. ISLAMABAD: Few days back the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Tassaduq Hussain Gillani took suo moto [Editor: This is a confusing legal term for me. Roughly I believe the Justice acted on his own accord. Check out the double-asterisk (**) for some hoped for clarification at the bottom] notice of an incident of rape of a minor Christian girl in Daska village. [There was] an inordinate delay in the provision of justice to the grieved family. [There was] police harassment [in] forcing the grieved family to patch up with accused rapist [which was] stated to be influential politically, [the] APP reported. [The] CJP further sought a detailed inquiry report of this case from the Inspector General of Police Punjab, Khan Baig.

During the mean time another gang raped case accrued in Dist. Sheikhupora. According to Sharing Life Ministry Pakistan (SLMP), Maria Sarfraz 11 was kidnapped and gang raped for three days. Maria was a school student and went to for her studies but members of Muslim religious political party abducted the girl and [had] taken her to another city. Her father Sarfraz Andrew went to the police station and registered a First Investigation Report – FIR No. 272/14 on 25^th April, 2014. The girl was recovered after three days and medical report declared the she was being forcefully raped by the accused for three uninterrupted days. Local police arrested Muhammad Safdar and Muhammad Mehboob. The accused has religious political back ground [thus] forcing [grieved] the family to compromise.

Rape victims’ grieved family had urged the CJP to provide them justice and stern legal action against the accused, besides, providing them the security of life and their properties, alleging that the accused rapists’ companions were also threatening them with dire consequences for not patching up. Family members said that the accused has also threatened to burn the [families’] houses of the local Christians and surrounding area, if they didn’t patch up with the rapist.

Sohail Johnson, Chairman SLMP said that Christian girls’ rape cases are being reported on regular basis, as radical Muslims entertain them as their slaves. We need to stop them their ongoing practice. He cautions them to hold their horses and requested the CJP to take correct measures immediately. SLMP is providing legal aid to the victim family. It is alarming situation that courts in [the] country are biased and loath in minority [children] cases, he added.

The Criminal Application Of AISPA for Suo Moto Contempt of Court against Mateen Hafeez and TOI has been admitted and is listed to be heard on 25/06 by the bench presided by Hon’ble Justice Khanwalkar.

When a court picks up a case without having victim approached it, it is called suo moto.

Suo motu, meaning “on its own motion,” is a Latin legal term. The origin is supposed to be Sanskrit- ‘Suo Moto’ means ‘Swa Mut’. Self Opinion’.

The term generally refers to a situation wherein a judge acts without request by either party to the action before the court.

Under normal proceedings before a court, a judge’s role is to direct the proceedings and act on motions filed with the court. When a party to a court case wants the judge to rule on an issue, or make a decision regarding something pertinent to the case, he or she files a motion with the court. The opposing party then has an opportunity to respond to the motion before the judge rules on the motion. In some cases, a judge acts suo moto, meaning without one of the parties’ asking him or her to do so.

Suo motu, meaning “on its own motion,” is an Latin legal term, approximately equivalent to the English term sua sponte. It is used, for example, where a government agency acts on its own cognizance, as in “the Commission took suo motu control over the matter.” Example – “there is no requirement that a court suo motu instruct a jury upon these defenses.” (What is “Suo Moto”? Editor: Apparently the judicial system in Pakistan and India acts on its own frequently with some controversy concerning the judicial authority acting extra-constitutionally. Here is an article of from Ahmed Uzair with the application of sua motu in Pakistan.

1. INTRODUCTION

The question of “judicial activism” is of an increasing relevance to us in Pakistan; more so following the judicial “revolution” epitomized by the restoration of the Chief Justice of Pakistan. Judicial activism derives its existence from the judgments of the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court John Marshal in the early 19th century. In the landmark case of Marbury vs. Madison ¹, it was declared that “an act [of another branch of government] repugnant to the Constitution is void”. The term “judicial activism” derives its origin in American political and legal discourse of the 1950s where Arthur Schlesinger Jr. in an article titled “The Supreme Court: 1947” profiled the nine Justices as either “judicial activists” or “champions of self restraint.”²

3. SUO MOTU

Judicial activism is invariably (but not necessarily) expressed in cases of judicial review i.e. people versus the State where an aggrieved person or group seek the court’s intervention against an action – or lack thereof – on part of the State. Exercise of suo motu ¹¹ can be classified as an extension of judicial review. However, and more crucially, in cases of suo motu the judge takes cognizance of a matter on his/her own initiative. On other occasions, simple applications filed in the court are converted into/deemed to have been filed as petitions.

Another distinction may be drawn here. The courts, being a creation of the Constitution, derive their authority from the Constitution or other laws that confer jurisdiction. The Supreme Court of Pakistan has been expressly conferred powers under Article 184 (3) of the Constitution to take suo motu action for the enforcement of any of the Fundamental Rights conferred by Chapter I of Part II of the Constitution. The said article reads as follows:

(3) “Without prejudice to the provisions of Article 199, the Supreme Court shall, if it considers that a question of public importance with reference to the enforcement of any of the Fundamental Rights conferred by Chapter I of Part II is involved have the power to make an order of the nature mentioned in the said Article”.

No such power is conferred to the High Courts by the Constitution i.e. to take suo motu action against the executive. The Constitution in fact goes so far as to state in Article 175 (2) that:

(2) “No court shall have any jurisdiction save as is or may be conferred on it by the Constitution or by or under any law”.

Therefore while a lot of the arguments for and against judicial activism in general, and suo motu in particular, are also applicable to the apex court, I will restrict my observations to the suo motu exercise of judicial power by the High Court.

Visible and engaged – Christian women are breaking into industry

ISLAMABAD: Research shows women wait to be invited to participate in new opportunities. They think differently than men and this difference can be a powerful source of competitive advantage. By providing women with the necessary experiential entrepreneurial training to leverage women’s unique skills and perspectives for new business creation, we can transform them from employees to employers. Access to employment is a serious problem for Pakistani Christians. Well-educated, young Christian men and women are not able to find employment.

The good news is that there is definitely a push to get girls into the tech arena. When a woman earns an income, she reinvests 90 percent of it in her family, meaning her whole community benefits. With the resources to establish her own business, her children receive better nutrition and improved school access, while other women and their families benefit from the knowledge she shares.

Sharing Life Ministries Pakistan (SLMP) program on women empowerment was successfully piloted in the fall of 2011 and provides women with entrepreneurial skills. By providing new skills to the degreed individuals who are interested with necessary training for new business creation, they propose helping to create new technology based company that create the jobs of the future. Sohail Johnson chief of SLMP said that we recognized that not everyone can be an entrepreneur but a key component of the program is the creation of teams that are mentored by an experienced entrepreneur who will capitalize on the individual skill sets of each participant.

Under this skill enhancement program, SLMP had trained more than 980 minority women in recent three years. Kiran Younis, 23, having 8 family members earn some reasonable amount for her family. She had never been to school because her father has low income; since she got training a chance at SLMP, she planned to send her young ones to school for an education. Mehak Shuakat, 25, joined SLMP two years back and now is earning an average income of 5000 [Rupee] per month, supporting her parents.

Schooling in addition to a fiscal empowerment brings an adjustment to a completely new generation. We wish that social rights activists will start working upon these types of collections as a substitute to losing occasion [to work] in addition to [including] methods throughout other pursuits.

ISLAMABAD: A Christian persecution has no limit, but Christian persecution news coverage is pitiable in Pakistan. Clearly, in today’s deeply connected Christian world, truthful unbiased and unfiltered news about realities of persecution is a basic need to address. I do write on it but don’t have any regular platform to publish this news. Some online papers do it but don’t pay even a single penny. There is no any regular assistance, my local paper doesn’t pay enough to meet the basic needs. A house rent, school fee, kitchen expenses and my daily expenses push me to do extra work and thus I cannot afford to reach far and wide. Sohail Johnson, chairman Sharing Life Ministries Pakistan claims that Christian prisoners are treated in a very inhuman way in Pakistani jails. The attack on Christian inmates is very common inside the central Jail Adyala, Rawalpindi and other prisons in Pakistan.

Last week of February, Peter John, inmate in Central Jail Adyala, Rawalpindi was beaten up brutally by the prison staff due to Christian faith. He was coming to church for Morning Prayer in the jail. (With the efforts of local Christian, a church is built in jail and a local priest visits them on a weekly basis. According to Safder Chuadhry, Shahbaz Bhatti – Federal Minister for Minorities, assured to provide funds for the said church in 2010, but didn’t fulfill his words). Chaudhry Safdar Saleem, Rah-e-Nijat Ministry asked me to join him to help the [beaten] inmate in this regard.

Due to my official commitment, I couldn’t join him but I published the news on February 27, 2014, Daily Khabrain, Islamabad. Peter John reportedly hung upside down and beaten up by the prison staff and was shifted to an isolated cell instead of the hospital. Safdar filed an application to the court to investigate the matter and prayed that the accused should be shifted to the hospital for medical treatment. The judge harassed the applicant to prove his own identity but he went to the jail later for a judicial inquiry on February 28, and found him injured. The Judge ordered to bring him to the hospital for his medical treatment.

On March 01, 2014; Tariq Chaman (President) & Shamim Masih (Secretary General) Minority Journalist Association Islamabad went to the hospital to see the injured inmate. The scars on his body, clearly tell the history to his brutal punishment [that was] faced. Peter told that a huge circle had been made in front of the barracks where he was beaten up. He also alleged that inmates are forced to run from one barrack to another [while they] are beaten up until they faint. Peter John is accused of theft and his case is under trial under section 683 PP. The international community should step in to support minorities in Pakistan and to support the voices of the voiceless who refuse to give up the idea of a pluralist society.

Muslims Vandalized a Church Under Construction

Pakistan: March 4, 2014. (Amir Parvez) More than one dozen extremist Muslims equipped with fire arms attacked foundation construction of a Church in village Chack Number 3/4L, in Okara district of Punjab province of Pakistan.

There are more than 50 Christian families in village Chack Number 3/4L who laid foundation of Church on their land and board of Church was installed but on March 2, 2014, at 9; 00 am more than dozen Muslims riding on a tractor trolley reached on Church site and vandalized Church foundation.

The Muslim attackers pulled down the Church board on which verses of Holy Bible were written with tractor on which they came; When Christians of village came out of homes to safe the Church foundation the Muslims attackers pulled guns on them and injured them with sticks.

The attackers were shouting slogans “No construction of Church in our village”“ (sic) No worship places of infidel Christians” which spread fear among Christian men and women of the village. Muslims Vandalized a Church Under Construction

ISLAMABAD: Religious freedom is guaranteed under Pakistan’s constitution, but discriminatory legislation punishes those who choose to actively follow the Christian faith and places restriction on the Church. Restriction on spreading the gospel publically [and] is reportedly banned. And [it is the] same with constructing new Churches. And honestly speaking, I am being beaten up by the radical Muslims in Mansrah district [for] selling religious books when [I] voluntarily worked with Operation Mobilization (OM team in Pakistan).

Christians of the Okara district dared to construct a new Church building along with a Christian school on a two-kanal piece of land owned by Akber Masih, one of their community members in the last week. But their dreams didn’t come true when a day after they had partially constructed a church building and installed a cross, radical Muslims came in and damaged the building first with their hands and later they ploughed the ground with the help of a tractor.

The investigation officer – IO Mohammad Javed – told that police have registered a First Investigation Report (FIR) and [are] raiding to arrest the accused.

Sohail Johnson, head of Sharing Life Ministries, reached there with his team and crop up; talking on the telephone he said that the FIR under section 295 – A and 506 – B of Pakistan Penal Code against ten people for damaging the church and defaming a Cross is registered but the police have not been able to arrest the accused so far. He said that Christians in Pakistan face discrimination in its different forms and are not protected in the country. He added that we are equal citizens of this country and our forefathers have shed their blood for this piece of land. We will fight for our rights if not rendered and in this struggle we will not spare any one. He demanded the Chief Minister to take strict measures against the perpetrators.

Farrukh H Saif, chief of WVIP said that we have been struggling against discriminatory laws for decades and will not leave any stone unturned to achieve the rights of our people. The Blasphemy law is used for vested interests and minority girls are raped and married forcefully.

Earlier in September 21, 2012 St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mardan [was] burnt by radical Muslims, and a year [later] in September 22, 2013 [around a] hundred [were] killed and over 150 injured in Peshawar church attack. Two Churches in Joseph Colony, Lahore were set ablaze with 150 houses of Christians to take revenge of the blasphemy allegedly committed by a Christian man.

SLMP wins blasphemy case in Pakistan

The Blasphemy Law is the primary way to persecute Christians in Pakistan. In Islam it is blasphemous to deliver a direct or indirect insult toward Islam, Allah or the false-prophet Mohammed (yup, I just insulted the Islamic prophet). In Pakistan the Blasphemy accusation is often in the majority of time falsely. The false accusation is often motivated from anything to a mere disagreement between a Christian and a Muslim to a Muslim desire to appropriate a Christian’s property which could even be a Church building. As much as Christians are discriminated against in Pakistan I would not be surprised that a blasphemy accusation from a Muslim is legit. An example might follow that a Christian in a moment of passion became fed up in being treated as a second class citizen often involving Islamic Supremacist contempt against a Christian or Christians in general.

Well some good news came this Christmas season for Pakistani-Christian Agnes because a Christmas miracle found her acquitted of breaking Pakistan’s Blasphemy Law.

SLMP wins blasphemy case in Pakistan

Lahore: Eventually reality revealed [as truth] and 56 year old Agnes won her event after 3 years of having difficulty. According to the report publicized by Sharing Life Ministry Pakistan (SLMP) which Agnes, 56 mom of 5 and arrested of a blasphemy event, was arrested on January, 2011. [The arrest followed] when regional property dealer filed a first Investigation Report – FIR no. 136/2011 beneath section 295–A (PPC) with police station in the city Faisalabad. Due to the ill therapy and pain during the woman’s jail period of time, she became a patient and it [was discovered and] figured out [she had] diabetes, kidney problems. Her family looked at the event but because of the lack of sources couldn’t solve [Agnes’ situation]. Fortunately somehow, the SLMP had taken on this event and looked at the concerns of the woman’s family troubles. Soon the SLMP positioned their attorney at law for Agnes inside the court and as soon as on July 14, 2011 she was bailed by furnishing the particular surety bonds of Rs. 100, 000/- towards the satisfaction of the learned judge. The SLMP served her family when she is at the jail as well as providing the woman legal assistance.

About October, 2013 the SLMP furnished a competent lawyer inside the court of whom won the woman’s case. The attorney Nadeem Anthony filed an application under 249-A, and drawn a person’s eye of the particular Magistrate the particular dishonest attitude of the complainant as well as the prosecution’s observance of definitely not appearing [in Court.] [Taken this] together with [Nadeem Anthony] taking the [letter of the] law into his hands, he requested the particular honorable Court to choose the app on its merits. Finally on December 07, 2013, the Judge acquitted and released the particular victim Agnes from the blasphemy event.

Sohail Johnson chairman of SLMP explained the fighting charge of Blasphemy were truly [expensive]. [This] has driven Agnes’ family deeply into debt and put a tremendous [strain] on relationships.

Sohail explained that a falsely arrested minor girl [was] earlier released in Islamabad. [The release occurred] although [a Federal Sharia Judge issued the order] to keep the enforcement of a mandatory death time period for blasphemy [arrests]. [This] could result in the execution of anyone who has been falsely arrested for blasphemy.
