Shamim Masih writes about pseudo-peace negotiations between the Islamic Terrorist organization Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) – which is outlawed in Pakistan – and Pakistan’s recognized legitimate political parties. Shamim finishes by recognizing the propaganda absurdity of a seminar that took place sponsored by the Asian Study Group promoting the concept that Islam is a peaceful and tolerant of other (i.e. non-Muslim) religions. Religious Bigotry

ISLAMABAD: Because of my internet problem, I couldn’t release however this matter forced me personally to do this. We are building not so much a multi-racial society or a multi-cultural society, we are building separate societies which really don’t have much to do with other. Equipped with just enough religion to hate those with another faith but not enough to love their coreligionists – Pakistanis have mostly turned their backs on religious atrocities. Religion is not to be, and was never, forced upon an individual against their own will. Unfortunately Pakistan is facing terrorism and some Islamic fundamentalists want to impose their rigid rituals and rights and the Pakistani government is in a state of confusion whether to face them or to face terrorism. In this turmoil, government is again wasting time to negotiate with them, knowingly that this process will bring no solid result.

Taliban peacekeeping troops and government of Pakistan negotiators are meeting to devise a strategy for formally kick-starting a much-awaited dialogue process. The Taliban had nominated five prominent figures – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) [Alternative PTI profile] Chairman Imran Khan, Jamiat Ullma-e-Islam (JUI-S) chief Maulana Sami ul Haq, Jamaat-e-Islamai (JI) leader Prof. Mohammad Ibrahim, JUI-F politician Mufti Kifayat ullah and Lal Masjid prayer leader Maulana Abdul Aziz to act as intermediaries between them and the government’s negotiating team. But JUI and PTI – the two avid supporters of peace talks wished the proposed dialogue luck and excused themselves from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s intermediary committee. And now the Taliban will be nominate Insar Abbasi and Oriay Maqbool Jan in the squad.

Fawad Chaudhry, one of the PPP [Pakistan Peoples Party (Alternative PPP profile)] political leaders has demanded that people nominated by Taliban for negotiations should be arrested and investigated for their links with terrorists. I support his stance because once these people are living in the country and if they are representing the militant groups and will negotiate on their behalf it means that they are one of them either in spirit or practice.

Asian Study Group, in collaboration with Kuch Khass, arranged a multimedia presentation on Religious Tolerance & Islam. They believe that – “Many mistakenly believe that Islam does not tolerate the existence of other religions. They gave the examples from the life of their Prophet (PBUH) epitomize the verse of the Quran which promotes religious tolerance and sets the guideline for Muslims’ interaction with people of other faiths.”

I am not a religious scholar but I know about my faith and very well aware of it as well. I wanted them to ask, which Sharia you wanted to impose, either the Taliban design or what about the Sharia which is already imposed in the constitution of Pakistan or both? I feel it is already scripted and its nut shell is; both groups will sit and negotiate and design some restrictions to be imposed on margined position in the society like women and religious minorities. It may demand to tighten the rope and neck of the minorities likely poised to make the death penalty compulsory for blasphemy. Earlier Pakistan faced a looming deadline to either comply with a court ruling to amend the country’s penal code to make the death penalty the only lawful punishment for blasphemy or to appeal the order. It may restrict religious freedom or freedom of expression. It is already the practice that religious minorities are not leading a healthy life in this arena. I am afraid that Pakistani Christians are already living a miserable life and do not have the right to be heard. If the government shot the bullet putting on Taliban shoulders, what will be Christian future in this country?

Samson Simon Sharaf and Pakistani Christian Patriotism

Shamim Masih writes a praise essay on Samson Simon Sharaf (Below My Thoughts) a retired Brigadier General from the Pakistan army. The impressive rarity about Sharaf is that he is a Pakistani Christian. This means Sharaf has achieved a high level in Islamic Supremacist Pakistan.

I Googled the Brigadier General to read some info that Shamim may not have provided. Sharaf is a prolific writer. He is a promoter of the political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) which is a political party that showed strength outside of two other political parties that have dominated Pakistan politics – Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N). Here is another blog with an odd name that has some pro-PTI information.

I have found that Pakistani Christians are typically intensely loyal patriots of Pakistan. Even after all the persecution they have received in matters of Pakistan patriotism Pakistani Christians will bristle up their back at perceived foreign enemies. The PTI is a centrist political party that seems to combine the promotion of an Islamic democracy mingled with a bit of socialism. Their appeal is based on the plank of uniting all aspects of Pakistan society under fairness rather than exploitation and corruption. The party’s leader is Imran Khan. Sharaf seems to have a close relationship with Khan. Under Khan’s leadership which has the support of the retired Brigadier General, PTI wants to dump the USA as a partner and make peace with the AFPAK Taliban. Khan feels that being embroiled with America’s war on terror has brought dysfunction to Pakistan society.

Shamim Masih identifies Sharaf as a Christian, yet Sharaf’s Facebook about page under Basic Information lists his religious views as “My own”. I am not so convinced that Samson Simon Sharaf is a committed Christian. I sense his Christianity is of a secular nature at best or of a dhimmi to Islam at worst. Or like a lot of Pakistanis Sharaf is Pakistan patriot like many Pakistani Christians. That is a mystery to me.

A mentor for Christian community

ISLAMABAD: Z A Bhutto is seen as a visionary leader with an enduring mark on Pakistan’s policy. Amongst his accomplishments are China, Afghan Policy, Nationalisation, Nuclear Program and convening of the Islamic Summit in Lahore. To co-opt the religious right in his global and domestic agenda, he nationalized minorities’ institutions depriving them of the oasis in which they thrived. According to one account, he remarked on the Christian protests against nationalization ‘If they do not behave, I will force them to wear black cloths’. Some Pakistani Christian leaders still believe him and follow him as great leader. Amazing!

The 1973 constitution institutionalized political isolation of religious minorities, taken a step further by the military dictator Zia ul Haq. He added discriminatory laws and introduced religious and sectarian divides that nation seems helpless to undo.

Though another military dictator Gen. Musharaf reintroduced the Joint Electorate, through an inconclusive selection system, he handed over charge of minority parliamentarians to party leaders in violation of Article 226 of the constitution. Successive constitutional amendments under the Zardri government have deprived religious minorities of whatever little voice they had in the federal government. As expediency with the opposition, he snatched the only representation “Ministry for Minority Affairs”.

Pakistani Christians have played a vital role in the development of the country. Since independence, we have given talented people to the country through the education institutions. This apart, we have Christian role models in every field of national life. A few meriting mention are Samuel Martin Burke, Justice (R) A. R. Cornelius, Group Captain (R) Cecil Chaudhry and Wing Commander Mervyns Middle cote (Shaheed). Pakistani Christians are proud of them and many more whose names I have not mentioned.

Unfortunately most emerging Christian leaders have fallen victims to their ambitions and prefer to be around party leaders than their people. Yet there has been one who works for the cause of his country and community with no personal ambitions.

Last week, I chanced to represent Christians in a local TV Channel talk show. I tried my best to highlight the plight of the Christians but a Christian politician in the show disappointed me. His demeanor and manner were negative and appeasing; avoiding burning issues and takes the bull by the horns. I was left wondering that if he with his unique style of politics cannot straight talk, what about others who are made of a lesser mettle than him. The fact is that Pakistani Christian politicians are a disappointment at large seeking seats and appeasing their parties at the cost of their people. In this absconding and unpredictable pitch I recently met a man who can play to win for his people selflessly.

Brigadier (R) Samson Simon Sharaf is a retired one-star general officer of Pakistan Army and a ground combater. He heads St. Mary’s College Rawalpindi, a Roman Catholic Institution of Higher Education providing world class professional education as also catering to Christian Boys and Girls, fallen through cracks due to socio-economic disadvantages.

He appears unassuming at a first glance and only an objective discourse can bring the best out of him. His eyes brighten and arguments become passionate. He quotes from history, literature and current affairs to discuss issues faced by the country and its minority communities. He is apt, straight and minces no words to call spade a spade.

He is perhaps the only Christian officer who has served in the Military Operations Directorate at GHQ in the post 1971 era. This is an organization that needs the highest levels of security clearance. He has handled one of Pakistan’s most prestigious and guarded Nuclear Policy. Later, he volunteered to reform the Army Public Education System and raised the prestigious Army Public College of Management and Sciences. As recognition of his services in Human Resource Development, the government of Pakistan rewarded him with a commendation and Sitata e Imtiaz. He trained both in Pakistan and abroad and is seen as a role model by officers of Pakistan Army.

He is pedigree stuff. His father Lal Din Sharaf Sargodhavi worked with Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah whose pictures he proudly hangs in his office, and this is where his inspiration and character come from. Despite being qualified in security and nuclear strategy, he prefers to call himself a Political Economist, the robe of a modern strategist. This is an area in which he has been writing for the past six years with remarkable accuracy, insight and foresight. Had the military heard his cries in the wild, Pakistan would have been a different country today. Rather than exhibit an elastic conscience, he chose to suffer for his convictions and fade away as a soldier.

His humility and candour dispels the impression of a military officers used to ordering. He displays humility and firmness crucial to win hearts and minds. As I sat in his simple and workmanlike Rector’s office laden with latest books and where visitors kept coming and going, I realized that I was encountering a person par excellence. He had a human angle to every issue and displayed the ability to be a good listener. In between, he was in touch with his military colleagues, dishing out wisdom. I was surprised that he has not drawn his salary for four years and diverted the finances for the development of the institution he heads. To cover his expenses, his daughter runs his water treatment and telecom business while he devotes his time to his passion for community service and Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf. He is the elected Central Secretary Defence of his party. This is where he sees a bright future for Pakistan and its non-Muslims.

I have read over a hundred of his recent articles from politics to international affairs, WOT, political economy and nuclear issues. Having met him in his office and home, I could humbly affirm him a “living legend”.

His personal study at his house is a room with books lying all around with his trophies and mementos hanging on walls. There is a wall size poster of Pakistan’s 3^rd Highest Mountain with his ice axe and snow boots hanging by the side. It is then I learnt that he was also a high altitude mountaineer, climbed Gashebrum1 (8068M) and enjoys desert rallies. He is the first Pakistani to have cross country traversed Pakistan’s most inhospitable Nara Desert in summer heat. He has also climbed Mont Blanc in France and made free fall jumps with a parachute. He still hikes and plays golf and tennis.

I was surprised to know that since 2005, he has been personally present at every trouble spot of Christians and worked unobserved to resolve issues. He does not claim credit and attributes his accomplishments to the work of God.

He hates to call himself a politician and claims to be a reformer. Within PTI, he has an impressive following particularly overseas Pakistan’s who keep calling him with their ideas. As a political leader, he prefers to work in the mainstream rather than take the easy and exclusive option of minorities. Yet, he has made enduring contributions to the party constitution on minority rights and Balochistan.

Samson Simon Sharaf is both a dreamer and a doer and a befitting person to become the voice of religious minorities in Pakistan.

The political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) failed to win Pakistan’s parliamentary elections in May 2013. Pakistan’s big winner was Nawaz Sharif. PTI’s leader Imran Khan managed to form a provincial government in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KPK). Khan made campaign promises that implied he will bring Pakistan out of corrupt governance with the aid of all Pakistanis. The insinuation of “all” means majority Muslims, minority Christians, minority Shia Muslims, Hindus and Ahmadiyya Muslims. The term for this new united Pakistan is Naya Pakistan.

Of Pakistan minorities those considered on the lowest rung of existence by the majority Sunni Muslims are Christians and Ahmadis. Thus unless a Christian is a beneficiary of condoned wealth by the majority they are in some worst terms of poverty and considered social pariahs.

The Naya Pakistan promises or manifesto relating minorities which is allegedly is inclusive of Christians runs something like this:

Imran, who chose the venue of Saturday’s rally for being the site where Indian Muslims first made their official demand for a separate homeland, pledged in his speech to always “speak the truth with the nation”.

He went on to assure that he would wage a ‘jihad’ against oppression and side with the oppressed, including women and minorities, if he came to power.

“I will establish the supremacy of law, I will not have property or bank accounts abroad,” he said, alluding to accusations of corruption against politicians.

No place for minorities in Imran Khan’s Naya Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A lot has been written about the plight of minorities in Pakistan – some by the minorities themselves and some by the majority. Minority rights in Pakistan were always broken. Majority always copes while minority bears the brunt.

In this piece, however, I want to focus on another aspect of the statement Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leader issued, which I doubted pertaining to Christians. I heard Imran Khan many times and observed that he is not favorable toward Pakistani minorities. During the 2013 election drive, he never favored them neither has he given priority to Christians in the priority list submitted to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Christians are the biggest minority in Pakistan but placed second on purpose. [SlantRight Editor: In trying to verify Shamim’s premise that Christians are the actual largest minority in Pakistan I discovered it is depending on who you read. What is evident is that Christians and Hindus are the largest minorities. The Christian-Hindu populations are essentially neck-n-neck as to which is largest. In order to offer the benefit of the doubt to Shamim the Pakistani-Hindu population seems to be on an exodus out of Pakistan which favors the emergence of Christians as the largest minority.]

PTI is a pro-Islamic political party and it is clearly seen that the PTI leader has been favoring the Taliban and has been in favor of Jammat-e-Islami – which is a radical political party and an ally party of the PTI in KPK. The PTI chief had been claiming from years that his party will provide justice to every citizen irrespective of cast, creed and religion but I personally observed him as rigid/fundamentalist. Finally, the PTI nominated Chief Minister in KPK is showing the real face of the PTI after coming in power in one province of Pakistan. While delivering his statement, he said that sanitary workers (cleaning drains, streets and roads) jobs will be given to minorities (Christians, Hindus and schedule casts) only. Muslims from the province are not eligible for this job. On July 2, 2013, RAZA ROOMI and BEENISH SALEEM have spoken about this statement on CAPITAL TV in SEEDHI BAAT (Talk Show).

Finally, someone from the PTI has spoken and has shown the double standard of their mentality. It is worth reflecting that in Europe and America Muslims have built mosques by the thousands and practice their faith daily, and it does not cause any disruption. Lately, since 9/11 there has been some change in attitudes by Europeans’ but it is minor compared to the horrors minorities face in Pakistan.

Christians of vicinity have been serving the nation in the educational, health and social sectors. Unfortunately, ZA Bhutto nationalized their institutions and declared them second class citizens. Now, the PTI leader is forcing them to perform cleaning or sanitary jobs.

Parvez Khatak has really hurt the feelings of the minorities. Christians are disappointed from the change they planned to bring in the country.

Dr. Nazir S Bhatti, President of Pakistan Christian Congress (PCP) has strongly condemned the statement and demanded immediate clarification from Imran Khan, chief of PTI on his party leader. He urged the Pakistani Christians to stay away from PTI because the next step might be to announce separate dress for non-Muslims in KPK.

Albert David – Chairman Pakistan United Christian Movement – PUCM declared it, highly insensitive, discriminatory and biased remarks from PTI leadership. PUCM chief has demanded a public apology and resignation from Mr. Khattak otherwise the PTI will face a strong protest by Non-Muslim Pakistanis if the leadership of the PTI does not take immediate action. Is this the “changing” that the PTI had been rallying for, David questioned the PTI leadership?

Shireen Mazari PTI spokesperson said when I asked about this statement, she sent me a text massage saying [SlantRight Editor: I am assuming Shamim is paraphrasing in English from the original language], “It was not against minorities. He spoke against the previous minister who hired hoards of sifarshis as sweepers and once in there these people said they could not do the job as they were “Muslims” and wanted to be posted elsewhere! So the CM said if these people refused to do the job they were hired for because they were Muslims and wouldn’t clean (etc.) then they should be fired and Christians who needed the job should be hired instead.” So how is that being against minorities?

It is amazing that the people refused to do the job they were hired for and CM declared this job is only for minorities. I wanted to ask the Christian campaigners, who have invested their time and money for this day?

It does make me feel that there must be some form of racism or discrimination towards people of other faiths especially in Pakistan where the minority is less valued or less valued as a worthy human being and thus are given jobs that is considered as lower-end jobs for (according to some societies) lower- class/worthless/low status people. I, however, think that is simply bang out of order. You can’t go round treating people who are not on the same level as you or who don’t share the same religion as you to give them jobs that are inferior just because they are inferior to you on the basis that they are not Muslims. It is morally wrong way to go about dealing with people.

Pakistan Elections 2013

Pakistan had its elections on May 11, 2013. Clearly the winning political party is Pakistan Muslim League – N (PML-N [The “N” stands for Nawaz]) meaning the new Prime Minister in Pakistan is Nawaz Sharif.

It appears that Nawaz favors a Free Market but is an adherent to purist Islamic ideology that makes up Radical Islam. The Pakistan Taliban believes democracy and voting are un-Islamic practices. Mohammed Hanif writing for The Guardian wrote this about Nawaz’s PML-N his cricket turned politician rival Imran Khan of Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI or Movement for Justice Party)

The Taliban’s real success is that they bet on the winners. They promised not to attack Khan and Sharif’s parties. And these parties will be in power. But the Taliban have never contested an election before. And they are soon to find out that politicians never keep the promises they make during the heat of the campaign. Nawaz has said he desires better relations with the USA and arch-rival India. Imran has said he desires to dissolve all military cooperation with American led forces in Afghanistan and ALSO to end the Pakistan government’s war against the Pakistani Taliban.

It is my opinion not to trust a self-proclaimed Islamist like Nawaz and at least Imran is upfront about his hatred for the kafir (i.e. infidel or in this case Americans).

Shamim Masih – my source from Pakistan – is a Christian and I believe he supported the major loosing political party – Pakistan’s Peoples Party (PPP). Shamim has written favorably about at least one PPP candidate that appeared to demonstrate concern of the persecuted Christians in Pakistan.

Election 2013

Christians congratulate the nation for the successful completion of parliamentary elections and would work with newly elected government for the prosperity of the country. Shamim Masih, President Reformation for Empowerment and Alleviation of Poverty – REAP and a journalist, while congratulating PML-N party’s victory in the general election 2013 has demanded the party head Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif to protect minorities’ rights as he has committed during his election campaign.

Pakistani Christians religiously and historically have proven to be loyal to their land and always have been subservient to its governments. It’s every Christian’s religious obligation to be obedient to masters.

As it is written in the Bible; “Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters and to please them well in all things; not answering again”. Titus 2:9 It is further written “Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the forward”. 1-Peter 2:8

The previous government was busy in their luxurious life of being in Government and sidelined the religious minorities and I hope the PML-N government will restore the ministry of Minorities Affairs which was transformed into Ministry of National Harmony which was established in 2011.

The Social Rights activists’ organizations welcome the coming government, World Vision in Progress – WVIP representative said we hope that PML-N will stop the misuse of blasphemy laws and forced conversion.

Albert David, Chairman Pakistan United Christian Movement (PUCM) has launched its candidates in this election said that minority candidates are elected under proportional representation system, but minority voters cast votes for Muslim candidates running for national and provincial constituencies. PUCM chief demanded PML-N chief will ensure equal opportunities for members of minority communities.

Basharat Khokhar, a human rights activist said that our community is already living below the poverty line, and when someone forces them to join their rally by showing them a gun, they give in. He urged that successful minority candidates in the actively advance minority’s interest instead of towing their respective parties’ line.

Tariq Chaman, president Union of Minority Journalist of Islamabad/Rawalpindi congratulated the PML-N chief and he wants Christians to be given proper jobs in government departments and not that of a sweeper. He further vows that when Mian Sharif expressed his willingness to take all parties on board but stopped short from crediting minority voters’ contribution towards his party’s Muslim candidate success. He hoped that the history will not repeat during PML-N rule and minorities will live in peace.

Christian PTI leader in trouble

Shamim Masih writes about Sajid Ishaq Sindhu a Christian leader involved in Human Rights and Political Activism in Pakistan. Sindhu is a prominent leader that has become embroiled in an adultery scandal with one Shazia Zafar. Shamim paints a scathing picture of Shazia’s extramarital affairs which her husband Zafar Iqbal accuses Sindhu of being instrumental. That which I have read so far has Sajid Ishaq Sindhu denying any accusation of impropriety; nevertheless the political party Sindhu is involved with has removed him from activity at least until the legal issues are resolved.

Christian PTI leader in trouble

Islamabad Pakistan (Shamim Masih): During the past week, Pakistani print media has raised a disruptive issue against the PTI Christian leader [NCCR Editor: Sajid Ishaq Sindhu]. Below links will make it clear that all have upturned the issue leaving Pakistan Today – PT.

During the past time, it is observed that Pakistani media avoid raising minority issues; it is either Gojra incident or Rimsha’s blasphemy case. I do remember when Rimsha was arrested and Pakistani media stepped in second to international media, and I wrote about it as well. But when it a matter comes of character assassination, it’s active and has crossed journalist’s ethics as well. It’s not the first time but Pakistani Christians have always been facing different kind of discrimination and its one of them. Let me give you the clear picture; during the said time I remain busy with my family matters and was not in the field.

There is no marriage that is problem free. Some marriages endure the ups and downs while others unfortunately fall to one of the very many reasons for divorce. Yet, it is not always the main causes for divorce that break marriages down. In many cases the marriage partners do not actually know the reasons and when those reasons become a problem.

Regarding this case [of accusing Sajid Ishaq Sindhu] I had few of the documents earlier and before writing this story I did get the copy of the First Investigation Report [according to Google better known as First Information Report] – FIR, which said that Mr. Zafar [Iqbal] (complainant) got married to Shazia in April 27, 1998 in Sainte Thomas Church, G-7/2 Islamabad.

According to Zafar (the complainant) after one year, Shazia Zafar was found in a love affair with her colleague Moen ul Islam Saddiqui, who was manager at Prime Commercial Bank, Islamabad. After some time she was involved with another banker Asad Ali Noon, who works in Askari Bank. In 2007, Zafar found that she had relations with Sajid Ishaq (the accused) in this FIR. Zafar also claimed that he found many dirty pictures of Shazia with Asad Ali Noon. In his FIR, Zafar complained against many unknown people that were involved in this case.

Now see the links below, none of them have mentioned about these other people accused by Zafar, either they have not seen the copy of the FIR or they deliberately omit those people at the time of printing this news.

Zafar has also submitted the telephone calls’ record as part of the prosecution’s evidence which shows that Shazia had been handling others as well during the mean time. I am not defending Sajid Ishaq nor presenting him a virtuous but giving you the facts.

The rumor was in the vicinity for the last few months as Zafar had been in the court for the custody of the daughters and separation suit against his wife Shazia for months.

Both [Sajid Ishaq and Zafar Iqbal] were acquaintances for 20 years and were aware of each other and now one of them has become legendary in position in the main stream political party – Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf – PTI and it’s clearly seen that all allegations leveled against PTI the leader is to blackmail him.

The police official also seems inclined to either the complainant or the accused or both. Because the police didn’t register the FIR during the past months and now after the PTI leader has submitted his nomination papers with the Election Commission, doubt is created.

The couple [NCCR Editor: I am guessing the couple referred to are Zafar Iqbal and his wife Shazia] has been living discretely for years, and the husband claimed that Sajid has played a pivotal role in ruining his life, but the fact written in his FIR says that they had not been leading happy life since one year of their marriage [NCCR Editor: I am uncertain if the “one year” refers the first year of their marriage or to one year out of their marriage]. His wife had been involved with other men as well. So how come he claims that only Sajid Ishaq has ruined their family life? What about Moen ul Islam Saddiqui, and Asad Ali Noon who is still with her and finally his wife? If he has been faithful to his partner and remained in the union, they would have lived a happy life. Shazia might be annoyed of his behavior or character. The case is in the court and we should wait until the court’s judgment.

I wish that the local media would always raise the minority persecution issues and should bring in the usage of constitutional discrimination against religious minorities.
